Fidelity earned Best Overall honors in our 2022 Annual Stockbroker Review for handling the needs of nearly any individual investor while still being accessible to newcomers. Fidelity provides a ton of news and market commentary along with extensive research on a wide array of investment options. If you’re new to investing, you’ll appreciate a large library of helpful articles.

TD Ameritrade is one of our top broker picks. It offers a variety of features, such as its competitive reliability, and is particularly strong in its tools for active traders, especially its thoughtful SWIM platform. Note that TD Ameritrade was purchased by Charles Schwab in 2020 and TD Ameritrade accounts will eventually migrate to Schwab. A new menu of services for the combined company has not been announced, but we expect many of TD Ameritrade’s services, including its well-thought-out SWIM trading platform, to continue at Schwab.

Which Is Best

E*TRADE won our Best Web Trading Platform and Best Trading App Awards in 2022. Active traders on the go will find E*TRADE offers flexibility and depth of use. Its suite of research providers is top-notch, making the broker a good choice for long-term investors as well. Newbies will find less content than TD Ameritrade and Fidelity, but its ease of use will still satisfy newbies.

Schwab offers a powerful set of tools for traders, investors and beginners, but its notable strength is financial planning. Clients will find useful calculators that can help them make long-term investment decisions. As mentioned above, Schwab acquired TD Ameritrade in 2020 and is in the process of merging the two brokerages.

Interactive Brokers has an excellent trading platform for professionals, but new traders can be overwhelmed by its complexity. Its margin rates are primarily low, making it the best brokerage account to work with for many high net worth clients, retail traders and institutional investors. IBKR is also very strong in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investments and transactions in foreign stock markets. Other Brokers Tested In addition to our top five trading platforms for 2022, we reviewed 10 more: Ally Invest, First Read, JP Morgan Self-Directed Investing, Merrill Edge, Sophie Invest, TradeStation, Tradeare, Robin Hood, Vanguard and Webble. Here are our top picks for each. To learn more, read our review. Ally Invest – For existing Ally customers looking to invest in stocks, Ally’s universal account experience and easy-to-use website is a convenient solution. Firstrade – While Firstrade is easy to use and great for Chinese-speaking investors, its overall offering struggles to stand up against brokers who also offer $0 stock trades. JP Morgan Self-Directed Investments – JP Morgan Self-Directed Investments gives Chase Bank customers easy access to investments and its complete platform makes money and wealth management easy and simple. Merrill Edge – Merrill Edge offers $0 trades with industry-leading research tools – specifically for ESG research – and excellent customer service. Even better, Bank of America, Merrill Edge’s parents’ preferred rewards program, offers eligible clients the best rewards of any bank broker we tested in 2022. SoFi Invest – SoFi Invest offers a wide range of services, is relatively easy to use, and gets high marks for its mobile app. Its lack of research, along with its lagging education and trading tools, has left it a step behind industry leaders. TradeStation – As a trading technology leader, TradeStation supports casual traders through its web-based platform and active traders through its award-winning desktop platform, all with $0 stock and ETF trading. Tradeer – Tradeer is aimed at advanced traders, but not those interested in cryptocurrency or futures trading. To get the most out of being a trader client, investors must be willing to pay for a premium platform. Robinhood – Thanks to Robinhood’s easy-to-use mobile app and $0 transactions. However, today, most major online brokers offer free stock and ETF trading. As a result, it is very difficult for Robinhood to overcome the competition. Vanguard – Vanguard’s mission is primarily to buy and hold investors, and its platform reflects that focus. Vanguard is known for its low cost funds, and the investment platform is really designed for those who only want to invest in mutual funds and ETFs. WeBull – WeBull offers a unique community experience and easy-to-use trading platform that will satisfy all new investors. However, for everyday investing, Weibull doesn’t have the trading tools and features to compete with industry leaders who offer $0 stock and ETF trading. For the 2022 Industry Awards 2022 review, all online broker participants were evaluated on 205 variables, collecting a total of 3,075 data points.
