The Colorado Springs business, one of the city’s last independent and operating music retailers, will move Monday from its main building and an adjacent annex at 3030 and 3020 E. Plate to N. Academy Blvd., southeast of Academy and Bijou streets. Independent Records opened in Platte 43 years ago.

Owner Orville Lambert said he expects to complete the move by Tuesday. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Independent Records may operate out of the Platte and Academy locations. The Platte location will be closed by Wednesday, he said.

Independent Records Moving To New Digs In Colorado Springs

The move involves moving merchandise and other items from the main building in Platte to the Academy site, about a mile away. The branch was closed a few months ago.

Independent Records was founded by Lambert and his brother Lewis in 1978 and sells music on CDs, vinyl albums and cassettes. also sells DVDs, video games, books, clothing and smoking accessories.

The move by Independent Records comes after it sold its Platte Avenue buildings in April to a limited liability company formed by Denver-based Big Splash Car Wash for $1.5 million. Big Splash plans to level the buildings and develop a car wash on the property.

Since selling the property, Independent Records has been looking for a new home. Orville Lambert said he wants businesses to stay in that downtown area.

The Academy Boulevard location leased by Independent Records has housed a used car dealership and pawn shop for many years. The property, Lambert said, has good visibility and accessibility, and thousands of vehicles drive past the Academy every day.

The property has excellent parking, which is important because Independent Records buys used merchandise and its customers need a place to drive, park and drop off, he said.

The new location has been remodeled inside, with a bright yellow exterior and a red front entrance — colors that match Independent Records’ Platt Avenue location.

Despite the smaller space, Independent Records has developed a plan to house its merchandise, and the business will remain intact after the move, Lambert said.

“We feel like it’s a very strong place,” he said of the Academy site. “The building looks around, so it looks bigger than it is. Some say it’s a better place.”

At one point, Independent Records had a top seven spot. All but one store in Pueblo and Platte Ave.-Academy Blvd. are now closed.

“Things haven’t worked out for us, but we’re moving that store to be located here and in Pueblo,” Lambert said. “And we’re looking forward to being in this new space.”

Understanding Your Property Taxes

Independent Records & Videos is moving out of its old home on Platte Avenue in Colorado Springs and looking for new digs.

The 43-year-old business, one of the last independent and operating music retailers in the city, sold its main building and adjacent annex at 3030 and 3020 E. Platte last month to Big Splash Car Wash of Kansas City, Kansas.

Big Splash plans to level the buildings and develop a car wash on the property. The limited liability company formed by Big Splash paid $1.5 million for the buildings on about an acre of land, El Paso County land records show.

Under the terms of the property sale, Independent Records can continue to lease one of its buildings for another five months while it searches for a new location, Lambert said.

Colorado’s Low Property Taxes

The retailer has since consolidated its operations and merchandise, including records and music, DVDs, video games, apparel and smoking accessories, at 3030 E. Platte.

The Independent wants to stay in that familiar area on the city’s east side, Lambert said. For now, he’s considering a site, but he’s still looking, he said.

Lambert also said being on the east side would keep Independent Records close to its main competitor, EntertainMart, a music and movie store in the Citadel Crossing shopping center northeast of Platte and Academy boulevards.

A priority for Independent Records will be finding a location with good parking, Lambert said. The retailer buys used goods and its customers need space to load, park and unload their vehicles, he said.

Appeals Process & Notice Of Valuation

Lambert acknowledged that Independent Records has suffered financially of late, but he declined to elaborate and said the problems were not related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Selling the Platte Avenue buildings “cured” many of those ills, he said, and the retailer is debt-free when it comes to real estate.

Lately, sales have also increased as Independent Records receives timely merchandise and partners with additional suppliers, Lambert said.

Lambert founded Independent Records in 1978 with his younger brother Lewis. Over the years, it expanded to seven Front Range stores. Now, it has closed all but its Platte Avenue store and another store in Pueblo.

Colorado Is The #3 State With The Lowest Property Taxes

Independent Records owns its building in Pueblo but is working on a deal to sell it and lease the space from a new owner, Lambert said.

Big Splash, meanwhile, expects to tear down the Independent Records buildings on Platte Avenue by the end of the year, said Claire Cunningham, who owns the car wash chain with her husband, Jason.

Big Splash hopes to open its Platte Avenue location by the summer of 2022, and possibly sooner, he said. Big Splash opened its first Springs car wash in December at 5760 N. Academy Blvd. the chain has a location opening in Pueblo this year.
