One of our family’s favorite places to visit in the summer (or any time of year) is a small mountain town in Colorado, about 100 miles west of Denver International Airport. And beautiful walks in the area. If you and your family are anywhere in the zone this time of year, here are a few things to keep you busy.

The BreakConnect Gondola is an 8-person cable car ride that provides transportation to and from Peak 7 and Peak 8 for visitors. The gondola is free to ride, but there is a small fee if you plan to ride a bike. Sit back and enjoy the view of the mountains as the gondola takes you up to 400 feet.

Isaac Hearthstone is 15 feet. A wooden troll is happily sitting along the Tolgastian Trail (located in the corner of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot). It is indeed a sight to behold. Originally created as part of the annual Breckenridge International Festival of the Arts, Isaac was created by Danish artist, Thomas Dambo, who is known for his efforts to raise awareness about recycling and recycling. The Country Boy Mine is open to the public and offers its guests mine tours, treasure hunts, and gold panning. The tours (which last about 45 minutes) fill up quickly so be sure to book in advance, but reservations are not required for gold panning or treasure hunts. The Mountain Top Children’s Museum offers children the opportunity to learn about the nature and wildlife of the Rocky Mountains, learn about the human body at the clinic where children can examine metal and X-rays, wear tights and can make himself. Create creations in the “Kidstruction Zone,” or participate in one of the many other programs the museum offers. Another great learning opportunity is Break Make It in the Breckenridge Arts District. Break Create offers workshops/classes, family tours and summer camps that every kid will love!

Located on the Stephen Sea West Ice Rink, the High Line Railroad Park is a great place for kids to harness their energy. The park has a large playground that every child can enjoy. Movies, monkey screens, and more will keep your kids smiling. There is also an actual retired train that sits on old tracks that you can visit.

Colorado has some of the best whitewater rafting in the country and Breckenridge is at the center of several rivers. Blue River is the only freshwater market in Summit County and Breckenridge, but just an hour south is the Arkansas River. You also have the option of both whitewater sections on Clear Creek and Eagle River. For those with young children, try looking into the Colorado River. Second class paddles are gentle but breakable and still provide a fun time on the water.

When we traveled with our whole family, we rented a house in the mountain so that everyone had more space. We were close to Epic Discovery Park and could walk up to the gondola and drive around town without needing a car!

When I travel alone with my kids, I love being in the city to be close to all the activities. We stay at the Marriott Mountain Valley Lodge in Breckenridge because we love the pool and it’s nice and close!

Kid Activities In Breckenridge

One of our favorite things to do with kids in Breckenridge during the summer is hiking! The mountains are gorgeous, there is lots of wildlife and the weather is nice and cool! Here are our favorite kid-friendly options in Breckenridge.

This is a fun, short and flat ride that your kids will love! Isaac Hearthstone is a wooden troll created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo and one of hundreds created by him around the world. Park in the ice rink parking lot and follow the sign and path to see the trolls!

The Iowa Hill Mine Trail is a fun hike with kids. You can walk through the old abandoned mine site and see the tools and machinery still used in the mine. Breckenridge is an old mining town, so it’s a great way to get some fresh air and learn about the history of the area.

The Snowflake Trail is my kids’ favorite trail in Breckenridge and we regularly see wildlife including moose and red wolves while hiking here!

Visit Sawmill Reservoir and fish or just relax and enjoy the view. Once we saw a whole family of moose swimming in the lake.
