The Front Range Express (FREX – stylized frex) is a bus service that began in 2004 and operates between Colorado Springs and Dover, with stops along the way at Grovewood Village, Monument, and Castle Rock in Colorado, United States. FREX operated on Interstate 25 in addition to stopping in each city. FREX served the southern portion of Colorado’s Front Range and was operated by Veolia Transport & Laidlaw Transit through various contracts during its lifetime. It is attached to the Metropolitan Mountain Transit division serving the Colorado Springs and El Paso areas. In 2005, annual ridership was 118,389 and daily ridership was 464.

In 2007, nine Gillig BRT passenger cars were purchased. Until 2007, FREX manufactured many different types of buses, including GMC RTS, MCI 102-C3, MCI 102-D3, MCI 102-DL3 and NovaBus RTS WFD passenger cars. However, the old buses are prone to accidents. To provide more efficient service, Mountain Metropolitan Transit buses were used from December 2006 until the new Gillig BRT transit buses were discontinued in mid-2007.

Due to bankruptcy, FREX faces the possibility of liquidation after February 12, 2010. As a last resort, FREX has put up nine Gillig BRT cars for sale. The first two attempts to sell the cars failed. On February 8, York, Pennsylvania’s transportation company made a $1.44 million profit, an average of $160,000 per car (loss). These funds allowed FREX to continue through the remainder of 2010 with limited operations, including overtime. The City of Castle Rock no longer wanted to help support FREX, so they stopped working on a shutdown.

Front Range Express (frex)

Because the budget for 2011 was higher than expected, FREX operations were extended for most of 2011 and 2012. However, due to the wishes of the new mayor of Colorado Springs, FREX operations were suspended completely in August 31, 2012.

On May 5, 2014, Dver Post reported that the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is planning a FREX interchange that will run along the Interstate 25 corridor and add new services to the hills along the Interstate 70 corridor. about all their city travel plans. The project is currently in operation, known as Bustang, and includes new cars with toilets. However, it doesn’t stop at Castle Rock like FREX did.

FREX bus service makes several stops along the Front Range, including several in the Dover metropolitan area. The list below shows the stops, ordered from south to north.
