Boomerang is a reliable parental control app for Android and iOS that helps parents monitor their children’s activities on the web, apps and mobile devices. But it’s mobile only, so you can’t use it to monitor Macs or PCs.
The Circle Home Plus parental control device provides good tools for monitoring your home network and protecting your kids’ phones and tablets, but it’s prone to workarounds and its reporting features aren’t as robust as the competition.
Mobicip gives you the basic tools you need to monitor your kids’ online and app activity, but the lack of sophisticated time and location tracking features hinders this.

Locategy’s parental control app for Android and iOS tracks your child’s activity and location, but the apps lack any social media monitoring, and there’s no Mac or PC support.

If you intend to monitor your children’s device activity in the modern age, you need a parental control service that works well on mobile platforms in addition to desktop computers. Kids can get up to all sorts of mischief on their cell phones (or tablets) on purpose or by accident. They may be spending too much time each day staring at a screen or using age-appropriate websites and apps. Either way, a good parental control app can give you back a sense of control and help keep a close eye on anything that might harm them.

Be sure to have open and ongoing conversations with your kids about the importance of responsible device use so they don’t plan to immediately get rid of any app you install or find clever workarounds. Kaspersky Safe Kids has been in this suite for quite some time. However, we have decided to remove the company’s parental control software from this list.
Although Kaspersky has long faced controversy over its ties to Russia, we continue to support many of the company’s products. This is partly because our work focuses on the products themselves, not on their geopolitical implications. Furthermore, despite allegations of collusion with the Russian government, no evidence has been provided that Kaspersky was a bad actor.
However, on March 27, 2022, the US Federal Communications Commission issued a warning calling the company a national security threat. This comes after several other organizations and governments stopped working with Kaspersky in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While we stand by our assessments of Kaspersky products, we believe this latest development warrants a different response. We’ve removed Kaspersky products from our Best For lists and added a disclaimer to all of our Kaspersky product reviews.

Parental control programs can help you stay in control in a number of ways. Some of the most common types of tracking include web content filtering, app blocking, time management, and location tracking. We’ll provide more details on these core features below. Note that some of the products we highlight are mobile-only, which means they can’t track your child’s activity on a Mac or PC. If these platforms are what you’re most excited about, check out our review of the best parental control software.
Most parental control services work similarly. You install the monitoring app on each device you want to monitor and manage settings and restrictions from a desktop website or parent-focused mobile app. Changes you make on any device take effect immediately. We appreciate those services that offer flexible device management.
Most parental control apps require an annual fee based on the number of devices you control. Prices range from $10 to $30 for monitoring one or two devices and reach over $100 in some cases if you need 10 or more licenses. Circle Home Plus requires a hardware device and possibly a premium subscription to get all its features. However, there are some exceptions. Some services, such as Locategy, operate on a freemium model, albeit with some restrictions that do not apply to the premium version. Others, such as Kaspersky Safe Kids and Norton Family, do not limit the number of devices that can be monitored.
Parental control software tends to be more powerful on Android than on iOS because Apple blocks app permissions and access to devices. Most iPhone parental control apps require a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile to be installed in order for all features (especially related to app controls and time limits) to work properly.

To monitor iOS devices, consider using Apple’s Screen Time tools, which compete with the free offerings of some competitors. Apple’s built-in (and free) solution is account-based, meaning it tracks data across all of your child’s Apple devices. Apple already includes a good selection of app blocking and web filtering options in the Restrictions section of the main Settings app. Microsoft (Family Safety) and Google (Family Link) also offer their own parental control solutions, which we cover in more detail in our guide to managing children’s screen time. We also have a feature to manage parental control settings on each game console.
A feature of any parental control program is its ability to prevent children from accessing inappropriate or dangerous websites. Many applications include their own browser, which makes it easier for services to manage, monitor and control web browsing activity. This makes more sense than trying to restore support for every mobile browser imaginable. Therefore, most of these apps tell you to block all other browsers or prevent your child from installing any other apps altogether.
Some parental control utilities do not force your child to use their own browser. Instead, they use VPN technology, connecting to the Internet through a local application to enable content filtering. When such a utility is active, you will see a VPN icon. The presence of this icon does not mean that the child’s connection is protected by a full VPN or that the device’s IP address is masked.
Most of these browsers work in a similar way, as they block access to websites that fall into prohibited categories, including all the biggest offenders such as file sharing, gambling, pornography and violence. The best examples intercept HTTPS-encrypted traffic and block access to anonymous proxies with no problem. Some programs, such as Net Nanny, allow you to create your own web filtering categories, and the vast majority allow you to add custom rules for custom domains. Others can block safe search settings and block profanity. The quality of web history reports also varies from service to service.

One area where most mobile parental control solutions excel is their ability to prevent children from using certain apps. This can be useful for parents who want to prevent their children from using social media apps, messaging services that are difficult to control, or browsers that bypass certain web filters. However, it can be difficult to keep track of every new app your child installs. Even better are services like Boomerang, which automatically block new apps your child installs until you specifically approve them. Mobicip gives you the option to whitelist only the apps you want your child to be able to use.
Blocking apps on iOS works differently. Optionally, you can block access to system apps like Safari, Camera, and Siri. You can also turn off the iTunes Store and App Store and deny access to the app
