Air Force Reserve Tuition Assistance
The military is well known for giving its soldiers the opportunity to go to school. Education is often one of the main reasons many people choose to join the military. Fortunately, each branch of the military offers education aids to help members pay for college or other formal education, and the Air Force is no exception.

The educational benefit was one of the reasons I chose to enroll in the Air Force and used the Tuition Aid program to earn my degree while in service. I also tried many classes to complete my studies.
The opportunity to complete my undergraduate studies while working was huge for me as it gave me opportunities once my enrollment was over. I had the choice of re-enrolling in officer school (OTS), or I was able to give up active duty knowing that I had four years of study and real-world experience.
Everyone’s situation is different, but at that time in my life, I decided to separate myself from the military to start my life in the civilian world.
As I used to use the Tuition Allowances to get my degree, I still have a post 9/11 G bill if I want to go back to school for another degree or if I want to pursue a Masters degree.

In other words, Tuition Assistance Allowances were very important to me as they saved me a lot of time and money, and also helped me get started when I quit my job.
If you are in the United States Air Force or considering joining, I encourage you to read about the additional benefits of Air Force tuition fees. You can do more to advance your career by earning a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree, earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree, enrolling in an OTS, or simply taking a class that interests you.
The best part is that you can take this course while you are in service to stay ahead of the competition when you are separated, whether it is your first time or you are doing a career in the Air Force.
Note: The Department of Air Force originally lowered the limit of $ 4,500 on tuition fees to $ 3,750 on the FY21. However, they changed course in November. 19, 2020, reverting to the previous limit of $ 4,500 per year.

Air Force members can also take online preparation classes or training camps as part of the Air Force Credential Opportunities Online (COOL) program. The AF COOL funding limit is up to $ 4,500 per member during military service.
$ 250 an hour per semester is sufficient for most local colleges and public schools. You can find ways to make up for the difference if your chosen school charges more per semester hour. Many other universities, especially those close to the military, have lowered the cost of tuition fees for active military members to match current tuition aid rates.
You may also be eligible for financial aid such as the Pell Grant, or you may be eligible for military scholarships through the school or other organizations.
Finally, you can use your GI Bill to cover the difference in tuition costs so you don’t spend anything out of your pocket. If you choose not to use the GI Account, you can pay out of your own pocket. The good news is that using a GI account only takes an extra part of your monthly benefits if you only use it as a supplement to educational aid.

You must visit your Education Center or access the Internet through the Air Force Virtual Education Center on the Air Force Portal.
All academic aid applications must be approved by the administration through the Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC) and must be within the TA application window 45 calendar days before and no later than 7 calendar days prior to the start date. Any TA other than the approved “supervisor” with the set start dates will be automatically deleted and a notification sent to the student.
The Air Force requires that beneficiaries of tuition aid successfully complete all TA-funded courses. Successful graduation is defined as a final grade of “C” or higher for an undergraduate degree and “B” or higher for a graduate degree (“Pass / Fail”).
Airmen may be required to return to the Air Force following an undergraduate ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade and postgraduate ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grades.
Air Force Tuition Assistance Benefits
Tuition fees must be reported within 90 days of the end of the course or the Central Learning Assistance Office will initiate a refund of the missing amount (from the end date). Once refunds have been made, they cannot be canceled or refunded.
Airmen who sign a military education aid form, MilTA Form 1227, agree to have money deducted from their military salary if they fail grades, fail the course, or fail to submit their grades.
Educational aid is designed to help aviators complete their degrees and other training. It was also designed with benefits to the Air Force in mind. For this reason, you can take advantage of tuition assistance to get a higher degree than your current one. For example, you cannot use the Tuition Assistance Program to obtain an Associate, Bachelor or Master degree.
There are exceptions to this rule. You can always take advantage of the tuition aid to complete the next CCAF degree, regardless of your current degree.

You can also take advantage of tuition assistance to complete your local college Associates degree if you have CCAF as long as your coworkers have a different subject and you do not have an Associate or Bachelor degree.
Finally, you may qualify for a second master’s degree if it is on an approved list of requiring courses. Some examples of suitable programs include some MSc programs in foreign languages / articles and MSc degrees in cyber law.
Education assistance is also available for graduate-level courses. There are other ways for the Air Force to pay for an undergraduate or doctoral degree, but these are specialized and highly competitive programs. You should contact the academic office for a list of current programs for these courses. Remember, you can volunteer for this type of training.
Please note that there may be exceptions to the use of Study Benefits. These benefits are usually available to all employees, but your personal or professional circumstances may prevent you from receiving these benefits for a while. For example, you cannot benefit from study allowance when you are in an educational institution such as Basic Military Training, OTS, Technical School, Professional Military Education (PME), Squadron Officer School, etc.

It’s no secret that our government is facing budget cuts that have affected the Department of Defense (DoD) and every branch of the military.
In recent years, we have seen many military benefit programs abolished due to layoffs and various financial cuts. Tuition Assistance was one of the most popular programs that was temporarily suspended and then reinstated. The DoD also provided educational support for each branch of service, but the Air Force made several changes that would affect the aviators’ ability to learn.
The rules on this page apply to active duty airmen or members of the guard and reserve. Guard and Reserve members have different rules and eligibility for tuition fees, which will be discussed in a separate article.
