3 WELCOME FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Thank you for your interest in Nursing Informatics at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON). This brochure will answer many of your questions and help you decide if one of our courses is right for you. Our MS and Post-MS programs in Nursing Informatics can be taken entirely online. No on-campus visits required. Most of our students study part-time while continuing to work full-time. We accept students in the spring (end of January) and fall (end of August). The application deadline is September 1 for the Spring Entrance Exam and February 1 for the Fall Entrance Exam. Military students and international students in the United States on student visas are subject to special rules and can only enroll in the fall. We are fortunate to receive many applications from highly qualified people and admission to the program is very competitive. We are committed to increasing access to education for underprivileged students and increasing the diversity of our Nursing Informatics workforce, while maintaining high academic standards. Your statement of purpose and cover letter provide an opportunity for you to provide information that may not be apparent from your resume and transcript. She has conducted several studies in this area, including qualitative studies, measurements, theory and usability testing, and the development and implementation of online interventions using various web components. dr. Nahm is the recipient of numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health. She is currently the principal investigator of the R01 study, Dissemination of Theory-Based Bone Health Program in Online Communities (August 2014), sponsored by the National Institute of Nurses. She has published more than five peer-reviewed journal articles and four book chapters in this field. dr. Nahm has mentored many doctoral students and taught graduate-level computer science courses. Arpad Kelemen, PhD, associate professor with expertise in biomedical informatics; EHR and development, optimization and evaluation of healthcare databases; healthcare software and game development; human computer interaction; intelligent patient care technologies using artificial intelligence; and data mining of big data in healthcare. dr. Kelemen has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and two books entitled “Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics” and “Computational Intelligence in Medical Informatics”. He is the PI in an HRSA scholarship, “Nursing Informatics Program Focused and Underserved”. In addition, he has received grants from NSF, NIH, NYSTAR and US NAVY. He has developed a large-scale intelligent software agent to make human-like decisions about assigned work and job satisfaction. He develops intelligent models, algorithms and systems for large-scale biomedical data, including healthcare data, genomics and clinical data. He currently leads the development of patient-centric and educational online healthcare games. 2

5 Charlotte Seckman, PhD, RN-BC, assistant professor, is a board-certified nurse informatics with a research background focused on translating evidence into healthcare practice; research into the effectiveness of design in automated supplier order entry; evaluate the usability of the electronic health record including system implementation, training and user satisfaction; and developing awareness and community engagement techniques related to web-based learning methods. She is currently working with the National Institutes of Health and the National Library of Medicine to develop, refine and evaluate an evidence-based practice system called EBP InfoBot. The system is designed to automatically find and provide patient-specific information from evidence-based sources that integrate directly with electronic health records. Ernest Opoku-Agyemang, MA, MS, RN, is a clinical instructor with expertise in supporting and implementing information systems in healthcare, finance, e-business and e-commerce. His most recent experience was working as a systems analyst in the Defense Health Agency’s Designated Provider Program (DHA/DPP), where he was responsible for testing, requirements analysis, and design. Mr. Opoku has also served as the Community Health Automated Medicare Management Information System (CHAMPS) Senior Systems Test Engineer for the State of Michigan. Before that, he worked in the financial industry as a consultant for the Order Checking System (OATS) for the NASDAQ stock market. Mr Opoku is a recipient of the UK’s prestigious Drummond Wolff Award for a Master’s degree in Developing Areas Studies and has been awarded the Distinguished Nursing Informatics Award from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, class as RN, he has practical experience in direct patient care in many acute care settings. Areas of focus include electronic medical records (EHRs) and barcoded automated drug delivery. He is currently a PhD student at UMB SON with a research focus on the use of mobile applications in the treatment of chronic diseases.

6 Ronald Piscotty, PhD, RN-BC completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wayne State University in 1998, a Master of Science in Nursing Business and Health Systems from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in 2006, and a PhD. in Nursing from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in 201. His research interests revolve around the impact of health information technology (HIT) on nursing practice and environmental quality and safety. dr. Piscotty is particularly interested in investigating the relationship between electronic nursing care reminders and missed nursing care in acute care settings. He has 16 peer-reviewed publications and 1 book chapter in the press and 0 peer-reviewed presentations at local, regional, national and international levels. dr. Piscotty has received both internal and external funding for her research. He has taught nursing courses at HBO and HBO level. Piscotty is certified in Nursing Informatics from the American Nurse Certification Center. He is a member of several leading nursing organizations, including: Midwest Association for Nursing Research, American Society for Health Informatics, American Nurses Executive Organization, and Sigma Theta Tau. 4

Health Information Technology Policy Nursing informatics faculties and students will use informatics resources to further develop informatics and social policy by collaborating with professional, political, government and non-governmental organizations.
