Partially meeting the key requirement of 36 credits, the Department of Psychology selects content-related courses from the offerings of developmental, abnormal/personality, social, applied, and experimental (learning, cognitive, neuroscientific) psychology.

All psychology majors are paired with faculty advisors. Under the guidance of a course advisor, the Department of Psychology designs the learning program according to your own interests and goals. The departmental student advisory service provides psychological advice on completing a major in psychology, on meeting the general educational requirements and on taking up a complementary major or minor. Psychology majors are required to meet with a faculty advisor before planning each semester.
Research is at the heart of psychology. Therefore, our curriculum comprises a series of three courses designed to provide a basic understanding of how knowledge is acquired and passed on. Psychology majors typically enroll in PSYCH160 Applied Statistics for Behavioral Sciences in their first year. After completing PSYCH 160 (minimum grade of C) and earning at least 30 credits, psychology students enroll in PSYCH 281: Experimental Psychology Methodology. After completing PSYCH 281 (minimum grade C) and acquiring at least 45 credits, the Department of Psychology enrolls for PSYCH 282: Experimental Psychology Application.
What Math Courses Are Required For Psychology Major
Psychology departments interested in the PSYCH 406 Psychology Seminar (topic vary by lecturer and semester) register at the door of the faculty office for the seminar of their choice during term times and must declare their interest. Please note that the requirements vary from seminar to seminar. This small discussion-based learning environment facilitates an in-depth understanding of a given topic as students analyze influential theories, read and discuss creative research, and improve their communication skills. It will also be a career path to graduate school.
Junior and senior level psychology majors may earn credits in collaboration with faculty to design and conduct research studies through the independent PSYCH 466 study. In many cases, these projects fit into the ongoing research program of the faculty. This pinnacle experience is awarded by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts based on nominations submitted by the Department of Psychology and faculty mentors. These projects are often presented at regional conferences. (Please note that the Summer/Autumn Independent Research Project application is due by the Dean by the last day of the Spring semester. The Spring Project application is due the day before the Thanksgiving holiday).
Psychology majors may earn credits for a supervised field research experience through PSYCH 497 Psychology Practicum. Psychology students pursuing this pinnacle experience and interested in completing PSYCH 282 and 90 credits should contact Jeff Leitzel (jleitzel@) for their first interview. The deadline for the first interview in the summer and fall internships is March 1 (summer internship is an abbreviated version of PSYCH 497, students complete 120 hours with a 3-credit field internship). The deadline for the first interview for the spring internship is October 1st.
The Department of Psychology earns credits for supervised educational experiences in higher education through Theory and Practice of Academic Psychology PSYCH 441/442. Psychology students interested in this culminating experience who have completed PSYCH 282 and earned 60 credits with a minimum average of 3.0 should contact Brooke Hansen (bhansen@) to request an application. (Applications require background clearance, which is paid for by the university. Applications close at the beginning of the fall or spring semester).

PSYCH 101 Introduction to Psychology (3 credits). We study psychology as a system of scientific study of behavior, mental processes and social relationships. The most important concepts and principles of the subject are presented. There are no prerequisites for this base class. This course can be taken to meet the requirements for General Education (Objective 6, Social Sciences 3 GEP), Psychology as a major, or Psychology as a minor. 3 hours of lectures per week.
The Major Branches Of Psychology
PSYCH 105 Psychology Year 1 Seminar (1 credit). We provide the skills and strategies for a successful psychology transition from first grade to college. This course educates students about academic expectations, resources, and careers in psychology. There are no course prerequisites. The registrant must be a freshman major in psychology or have permission from an instructor.
PSYCH 131 Psychology of Adjustment and Happiness (3 credits). Examine the personal and social effects of psychological adjustment. It emphasizes growth and well-being, the concept of stress and coping, and the psychosocial skills of adulthood. This course requires active participation in class discussions and active challenge.
