If there’s one thing we’ve learned about airline loyalty programs, it’s that a downgrade in one program tends to lead to similar (or identical) changes in another program. So it was only a matter of time before American followed a similar path while other airlines followed when United officially announced that it would be scrapping its bonus cards and moving to more varied pricing.
Hawaiian Airlines Frequent Flyer Partners
Because right now, Hawaiian Airlines has announced changes to the HawaiianMiles program that appear to be a move toward dynamic award ticket pricing rather than a fixed level. Let the chart speak for itself. Below is a table of previous rewards.
Earning And Using Hawaiian Airlines Miles
As you can see, the biggest change is that airlines are moving away from a clearly defined set of rewards. Instead of using separate “saber-level” pricing, we simply provide a scope. Of course, flights can still be offered at the lowest bonus prices, but combining three different tiers into one range (with a fairly high cap) is a risky change.
Editor Scott Mayerowitz received an email regarding the changes at 3:10 p.m. EST, and the new awards table has already been posted on the Hawaiian website.
Let’s start with the least affected area, the nearby island flights. On the old chart, that flight would be 7,500 or 15,000 miles one way in economy class. That low price remains, but it can now be priced up to 20,000 miles one way. However, this is usually not a big refund as toll rates are usually very low.
Flights from the United States to Hawaii are even more important. Since the original awards chart treated all of North America as one region, flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Hawaii follow the same fare class as flights from New York-JFK. Changed in the new reward table.

Moving from the East Coast to another is a big change as the lowest price jumped 50% as a result. However, the upper limit of the range is
. This essentially gives Hawaiian the flexibility to price rewards wherever they want, such as a round trip from JFK-HNL during the Christmas holidays.
The bottom of this price remains the same, but the top has increased by 58%! Business class awards are currently technically slightly cheaper. Although the range limit has been increased from 130,000 miles to 80,000 miles, it’s still an incredibly poor value for a relatively short flight to Aloha State.
If you think these changes are bad, check out the new lineup of flights from North America via Honolulu (HNL) to other international destinations. Surprisingly, the top end of economy class is sometimes lower than the top end of business class. Below is a table with an overview of these changes to economy class.

Again, compared to previous rates, the mere fact that this is a scope rather than a clearly defined basket of rewards means the program has moved to fully variable pricing.
One of the only (minor) positive aspects of this bonus table change is that it only applies to those who hold one of the Hawaii Elite or airline co-branded credit cards. These members are now eligible for discounted Economy Award tickets when traveling inter-island and between Hawaii and North America, a system-wide option. However, these discounts are not as useful as you might think, as these discounts apply to the scope of the new rewards table.
It’s basically a devaluation, especially for East Coast residents who want to fly to Hawaii, but the airline’s PR team positions it as an entirely positive thing for its members. Note the use of phrases such as “add convenience” and “increase flexibility” in Hawaiian Newsroom statements.
“We have simplified the description of bonus tiers and consolidated single-use tiers into three main ranges: Main Cabin, First Class (domestic flights) and Business Class (international flights). We’re also expanding our Main Cabin rewards from Tier 3 to Tier 9, giving you more convenience and options when you use your miles to book travel on our network. Now members can take advantage of: When flying in the main cabin of Hawaiian Airlines, you can redeem miles on any flight. More flexibility to use HawaiianMiles to travel at any time of the year, including peak times, we have the flexibility to book our trips at a time that suits us best, either six months in advance or the day of departure.
The Complete Guide To Hawaiian Airlines Partners
We’ve seen many examples of airlines miming with the devaluation of loyalty programs, and the transition to more dynamic bonus pricing is a prime example. Delta, Flying Blue, United, American and now Hawaiian (to name a few). Not only are carriers changing the way they classify North America; Also in many cases
Would many travelers choose to spend 60,000 miles on one-way economy class award tickets between North America and Hawaii? Probably not. But that’s not the point. Hawaiian Airlines is fundamentally changing award ticket pricing to allow award fares to increase during periods of high demand and to do so without warning.
