“If there is anything more reprehensible than the practice of discriminating against a person on the basis of race, caste, religion, national origin or descent, it is to accept it without protest or opposition on the part of the victim. It is evidence of a complete lack of self-confidence, the most invaluable resource an individual or a group can have, without which there can be no human dignity. “

Asa Philip Randolph was a pioneering leader, organizer and social activist who advocated for fair labor rights for African American society, and became one of the most influential leaders of civil rights and social justice in the 20th century. Its activism spanned 60 years, including the organization of the largest union of black workers in the United States and the two March combinations (1941 and 1963) in Washington.

Randolph spent the formative years of his early life in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on April 15, 1889 in Crescent City, Florida, to Pastor James William Randolph, a designated minister of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and his wife, Elizabeth Robinson Randolph. In 1891, when he was three years old, the family moved to Jacksonville. He studied at Edward Waters University (a historic Black College founded in 1866) before transferring to the Cookman Institute (a historic black educational institution founded in 1872 and located in Jacksonville), from which he graduated in 1907 as a Validictorian.

In 1911, recognizing the limitations that racial segregation had placed on his life in his native Florida, Randolph left Jacksonville and moved to New York City. At first he hoped for life on stage, but redirected his talents to justice and fairness in work and community life. During World War I, Randolph faced terrible adversity in uniting African-American shipyard workers and elevator operators. During this time, along with his friend and collaborator Chandler Wayne, Randolph Messenger Magazine edited and published between 1917 and 1925, during which time it served as a promotional vehicle for the Harlem Renaissance.

When he became the first president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925, Randolph’s career as a labor leader underwent a change that would become the first official African American workers’ union by 1937. After his victory in organized labor, in the 1940s, Randolph focused his attention on the goal of ending racial inequality in the public defense industry and greater separation of the armed forces, both by presidential decree. He was involved in further civil rights work, and was the main organizer of the proposed march in Washington in 1941 and better known in Washington in March 1963 when Pastor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

On May 16, 1979, at the age of 90, Mr. Randolph died. He was cremated, and his ashes were cremated in Washington, DC. Philip was buried at the Randolph Institute.
