During the WWDC 2021 keynote, Apple announced something incomprehensible. FaceTime, the company’s own video calling software, is available for the first time on non-Apple devices.
Is There An Android App For Facetime
This is a big deal because Apple’s system deadlock means it’s rare that Apple’s software can be used on other devices. But this announcement is a bit bittersweet because if you look at how FaceTime actually works on Android and Windows, it shows Apple’s lazy attitude.
Android App That Works With Facetime
The thing about this news is that Apple didn’t announce a new FaceTime app for Android and Windows devices. Instead, it releases a web interface to its video calling software that Android and Windows users can connect to and participate in. Apparently, non-Apple users can only join pre-programmed calls via a link and cannot make calls themselves.
It’s the bare minimum attempt to make FaceTime cross-platform, and I use the term “cross-platform” very carefully. But this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since Apple has always resisted releasing its software to other platforms.
The point is that there are three applications made by Apple available for download in the Windows and Google Play stores. Android has Apple Music, the companion app Beats, and the very selfish “Move to iOS,” while Windows has iTunes, iCloud, and Apple TV.
The Apple TV app isn’t on Android, but you can get it on many other streaming devices. These include Roku, Google TV with Chromecast, PS5 and Xbox Series X, and Apple’s Apple TV 4K. Currently, the only way to get Apple TV on Android is through a browser.
Facetime On Android With Ios 15!
Presumably, this move, like bringing Apple Music to Android and browsers, was supposed to help bring Apple TV Plus subscriptions, because there’s no logical reason to keep original service content exclusively on Apple devices if there’s money to be made elsewhere.
Apparently, this has never been the case with FaceTime or iMessage. Both are free services and have been one of the main strengths of locking into Apple’s ecosystem. Apple itself admitted this, as we found out during the ongoing app store dispute with Epic Games.
In 2013, just two years after the launch of iMessage, Apple executives ended a project that could have brought the service to Android devices. The documents revealed that Craig Federighi, director of software and engineering, head of iOS, and Phil Schiller, head of the App Store, strongly opposed the idea.
Federigh is alleged to have said that making iMessage cross-platform would “simply remove [the] barrier for iPhone families to give their kids Android phones”, as well as stating that it would be a “terrible idea” to “make it easier for someone to move off our platform”.
Facetime Is Coming To Pc And Android Via A Web App
In this context, it is very easy to understand why FaceTime was adapted in this way and not developed as a full cross-platform application that users could download as they would on an iPhone or Mac.
It honestly seems like a lukewarm response to Epic Games’ test when Apple offers a token version of one of its services on other platforms. Apple can now say “we don’t block all our software on our devices, look!”.
On top of that, this new web-based FaceTime arrives 18 months after the COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary for people and businesses to invest in video calling software. The market is largely saturated at this point, and Apple’s unconvinced attempt to bring FaceTime to non-Apple users seems too little, too late.
If Apple really cared about alienating non-Apple users, it would take the plunge and launch FaceTime as its own app on other platforms. Ideally, the app would give Android and Windows users exactly the same features and freedoms as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
How To Use Facetime For Android
Even better, Apple should bring iMessage along for the ride. Video calls are great when you need them, but text messages are popular for a reason. It’s easier, faster and much more convenient for casual conversations.
If Apple is willing to allow users of other devices to use FaceTime and enjoy all the privacy rights it offers, it should be a two-pronged approach. Because it doesn’t make much sense to allow users to communicate on secure video channels if they’re otherwise communicating via highly insecure text messaging.
The only option for cross-platform groups would be to use a completely different service that offers practically all text, voice and video services. This automatically makes these services more attractive in the long run and allows people to communicate in all these different ways without switching apps or windows.

It’s a far cry from his days as publisher of Gizmodo UK, when pretty much everything was on the table. He can usually be found squeezing another giant Lego set onto the shelf, pouring large cups of coffee, or complaining that Ikea won’t let him buy the things he really needs online. Apple has finally made it possible for people to use FaceTime on Android phones … a little. It’s not as simple as downloading the FaceTime app on your Android phone from the Google Play Store, but the video calling feature is there. We’ll show you how it works.
Facetime Für Android: So Nutzt Ihr Apples Videotelefonie Ohne Iphone
The problem here is that you can’t start a FaceTime call from your Android device yet. However, you can join a FaceTime call if someone with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac invites you. It’s not quite the “FaceTime for Android” dream, but it’s the best we’ve got.
To use FaceTime on Android, you need a supported browser (such as Google Chrome) and a friend or family member with an iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device. iPhone and iPad users with iOS 15, iPadOS 15 or later can open the FaceTime app and select “Create Link”.
If the Mac is running macOS 12 Monterey or later, they can find the “Create Shortcut” button at the top of the FaceTime app.
Open the link in Google Chrome on your Android phone or tablet. As of this writing in July 2021, Chrome is the only supported Android browser. Enter your name in the field and tap “Continue”.
Facetime Für Android Nutzen? So Klappt Es Auf Jedem Gerät!
Once inside, you have the typical video conferencing controls at the top of the screen. These include making the video full screen, muting the microphone, showing or hiding the video, rotating the camera and more.
You are now in the basic version of FaceTime calling on your Android device! When you’re done, tap the screen to bring the toolbar back up and select “Exit.”
Although it is done entirely through the browser, the quality is really good. Is it useful as a full-fledged FaceTime app for Android? No, but it’s a valid solution.

FaceTime is a reliable way to video chat between iPhone, iPad and Mac users. If you own one of these Apple devices, it’s easy to take FaceTime for granted.
Unfortunately, Android users cannot download the FaceTime app or start their own FaceTime calls. But with the release of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS 12 Monterey, anyone can join a FaceTime call, even from an Android phone.
Here’s how you can send a FaceTime invitation from an Apple device and then join the FaceTime call on an Android phone or Windows PC.
Best Alternatives To Facetime On Android
1. Have an Apple user open the FaceTime app on their device and select Create Shortcut at the top of the app.
2. The Apple user must then select how they want to share the link in a pop-up window, Messages, Mail, Snapchat, AirDrop or another app. Whichever method you use, the Android or PC user just needs to be connected.
3. When an Android or Windows user gets a link to facetime.apple.com, they need to open it in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
5. Once registered, ask the Android or Windows user to press the green Join button on the mobile phone popup. They may also need to grant FaceTime permission to use the microphone and camera.
