At its Samsung Unpacked event earlier this month, the Korean tech giant showcased half a dozen new products, including the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Watch 3, and the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 2. But hidden in all the product announcements is Samsung’s commitment to providing its customers with updates to the Galaxy line for three generations.
Update For Samsung Android Os
At the time, few details were given and many wondered what the three generations meant. While most assumed it meant Android OS updates, others speculated that it could just be a UI or security updates.
Samsung’s Latest Phones Could Get Four Years Of Android Os Upgrades!
After weeks of speculation, Samsung has clarified its commitment (opens in a new window). The company offers three generations of Android updates for its flagship and mid-range Galaxy lineup. The list of supported devices includes all Samsung Galaxy S20 and Note 20 devices, all Galaxy Foldables and future products in the range. The list includes the upcoming Galaxy Tab S7 and last year’s Tab S6 lineup, as well as upcoming Tab S products. A few Galaxy A-series phones, including the A71, A51, and A90, will be included, along with select future A-series devices.
This commitment is good news for Samsung smartphone owners, as it means that almost all products in the current portfolio will continue to update the OS via Android 13. The original Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Tab S6 will receive the latest updates with Android 12. The Samsung Galaxy S20 series will be the first to get the Android 11 treatment, which may anger some future Galaxy Note 20 and Tab S7 owners. If the Note 20 series arrives after Android 11, that doesn’t mean you’ll be next in line for S20 owners, but the new Note 20 devices will stop updating the same year as their big brother.
According to Samsung, Samsung plans to roll out the Android 11 update to the Galaxy S20 series in 2020, although there is a lot of wiggle room in the announcement. The disclaimer states that the Android 11 update roadmap for the Galaxy S20 may vary by market or carrier. If you bought an unlocked version of the Galaxy S20, you’ll be among the first to get the update. However, if you ordered through a carrier, you may have to wait longer as the carrier checks and adds more settings before sending the updates.
The announcement is long overdue and puts Samsung on a slightly more competitive footing with Apple’s iPhone line and Google’s Pixel smartphones. However, release day upgrades or even quick upgrades for the iPhone, Pixels, and Android One smartphones don’t seem to be in the cards. Aside from a commitment to update the Samsung Galaxy S20 series to Android 11 later this year, the company has yet to commit to even a rough roadmap for annual OS updates.

Suffice it to say, Stephen Winkelman is obsessed with mobile technology. Since joining as a mobile analyst in 2019, he has analyzed more than 100 phones and tablets. Prior to that, he covered mobile and wearable technology as a staff writer at Digital Trends. The major downfall of most Android mobiles is that manufacturers don’t provide regular patch updates. In most cases, after a major update, they abandon the phone forever. During the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 event, Samsung promised that it is going to update three major Android OSes for most mid-range and flagship mobile phones. So if you buy a mobile phone the year it’s released, you get three major OS updates extra. So you get software updates for about four years, including the current version of the OS. it’s beautiful. Sometimes people complain about Samsung for not providing regular updates. But after One UI, they changed a lot in the software department and realized monthly patch updates and OS updates. Samsung phones always last longer than other mobile phones. So three major OS upgrades is a good idea.
In case you didn’t know, Samsung has a habit of giving two major OS upgrades to all mobile phones, including flagships. So if you buy a mobile phone with Android Oreo 8.0. You get Pie 9.0 and Android 10. So if you buy the mobile at launch then the full year cycle will count as three. Buy If you buy a mobile after a year, you only get one major upgrade. Because it has already received a major update. The “Three Core OS” guarantee shows how much Samsung trusts its hardware. It will also give confidence to users. So, people will buy more products in future. Due to intensive expansion of mobile line, Samsung may not provide regular monthly patch updates. If they provide updates every 60-90 days, it is good for users.
Yes, if you resell your cell phone because the software update year is over, it may not get a fair value. But now, with an extra year of software support, most Samsung cell phones have good resale value. If you have a Samsung Galaxy A71 with Android 10, you can get Android 11, 12, and 13. So if you want to upgrade to the flagship next year, upgrading will cost you 50-80% of the original price. Two years of rest.
Samsung Sets The New Standard Of Four Years Of Os Upgrade To Ensures The Most Up To Date And More Secure Galaxy Experience
Initially, Samsung only added high-end mid-range mobile phones and flagship mobile phones. In future they may add some mid range mobile phones. But confirmation of the update is Samsung’s sole choice. Samsung officially announces the following list of mobile devices to receive three major OS updates. Samsung “S” series – flagship mobile phones
Due to software updates, Android mobile devices are worth less than iPhone. I have launched three major OS upgrades that will definitely increase the resale value of Samsung mobile phones. Most of Samsung’s flagship mobile phones and upper mid range mobile phones already command a decent amount of money in the market. Samsung has already announced the Exynos 5G processor for its mid-range mobile phones. So from a hardware point of view we are also suitable for the following years. Most users prefer stock Android based mobile phones if they want to spend $300 and above. So, if you spend $300-500 on Android mobiles, add Samsung mobiles to your list.
In my opinion, mobile device manufacturers should also focus more on software. Since aftermarket software is a large part of everyday use. If it can’t handle the hardware, the chart has no use for higher specs. What do you think of Samsung’s extra year of Android OS updates? Did you find this helpful? Comment below.

Samsung Galaxy Android 12 Update
After Samsung expanded its Android OS update policy from two to three major OS updates, it looks like the company is ready to do it again in Unpacked 2022. According to a new leak, Samsung plans to expand its multi-device Android update policy from three. Four major OS updates.
Additionally, the leak suggests that the Korean tech giant is now committed to providing security patches for five years instead of four.
Currently, the devices that appear to be covered by this future policy are the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy S22 series, and the Galaxy Tab S8 line and the two latest foldable phones. Namely, Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.
In other words, the Galaxy S22 and Tab S8 will ship with Android 12, but due to upcoming firmware policy changes, they should be updated to Android 16 sometime in 2025-2026. Of course, in addition to these four major Android OS updates, the aforementioned devices will enjoy at least five years of security updates.
Samsung Confirms Galaxy S20 Will Get Android 11 First, Clarifies Os Update Promise
Needless to say, this change will significantly extend the life of the new Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung customers can stay with Android OS features for longer before they start thinking about spending more money to upgrade their phone or tablet. They always have the option to update it sooner rather than later, but if Samsung doesn’t force their hand, that’s a big plus.
