Five Strategies For 21st Century Early Childhood Teachers

Intentional learning considers the role of adult participation in children’s play (Epstein, 2007). The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) defines teaching as: “modelling and demonstrating, open-ended questioning, inference, explanation, engaging in collaborative thinking and problem-solving to improve children’s thinking and learning” (DEEWR, 2009, p. 5 ). In our work, we developed the “Game Framework” to overcome the difficulty of balancing open-ended play with intentional learning.

The play framework is derived from our research with children and teachers. We looked at how teachers can engage children in play-based sustainability learning. 16 teachers and 119 children were involved in the project. Teachers were invited to develop a play-based learning experience with children using three main types of games (Trawick-Smith, 2012). Game types are: free game; Modeled Drama; And deliberately framed game (see text box below). We collected examples of teacher planning and evaluation for each type of game, videotaped children’s participation in the game, and video-stimulated recall interviews of children and teachers. At first we thought that the deliberately framed game would be a favorite of children and teachers. We felt this way because this type of play includes many features of intentional teaching, such as asking questions and explaining (Edwards & Cather-McKenzie, 2013).
