Flying Blue is the frequent flyer program of Air France and KLM. This is one of the biggest loyalty programs in Europe. The program also acts as a frequent flyer program for Kenya Airways and TAROM, as well as Aircalin, a small regional airline in New Caledonia.
Amex, Capital One, Chase and Citi points are transferred to Flying Blue. It’s a simple program to earn miles with credit card purchases and sign-up bonuses.

This guide explains how to earn Flying Blue miles, how to earn elite and different levels, and how to redeem miles.
Bart Lapers On Twitter:
Flying Blue is a great program, especially for travelers looking to travel to Europe in business class. Reward pricing across the Atlantic starts at just 53,000 miles each way in Business Class.
The program is not without its quirks, however. You cannot build an itinerary manually like in other programs. This website has limited functionality. You cannot redeem miles for first class tickets unless you are a Gold or Platinum Elite member.
What makes Flying Blue unique is that it is a loyalty program for many airlines. This is a frequent flyer program for the following airlines: Air France, KLM, Kenya Airways, TAROM, Aircalin, Air Corsica, Challair Aviation and TwinJet.
The founding members of Flying Blue, Air France and KLM are members of the SkyTeam alliance. So Flying Blue is essentially a SkyTeam loyalty program. If you achieve Elite status through the program, you will have a SkyTeam Elite or Elite Plus membership. You can also earn and redeem miles to travel on SkyTeam airlines.

Earning and redeeming Flying Blue miles has many benefits. Flying Blue works with all major US points redeemable currencies, so earning miles is easy. You’ll also find reasonable exchange rates for Air France and KLM travel, as well as monthly reward sales.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Flying Blue had monthly promotional prizes. Up to 50% off the award cost of an Economy, Premium Economy or Business Class award ticket for these awards. Tickets are limited to certain markets and cannot be changed or cancelled, but are extremely valuable.
Flying Blue unlocks huge savings on Air France and KLM flights. With a little flexibility, you can earn business class awards (even outside of promotional awards) for just 53,000 miles from the US to Europe.
Prize pricing may be higher because Flying Blue has a dynamic pricing structure. The cheapest seats are limited, but if there are seats on sale, you can always find room for a bonus. Both Air France and KLM offer last seat awards. This means that if a seat is sold, you can use your miles to reserve it.
Flying Blue American Express
Flying Blue opens its schedule 360 days in advance. This is great for anyone planning their trips in advance as you can book for almost a year. When Air France and KLM load their schedules, they usually also offer many premium seats at low prices.
Miles transfer to Flying Blue from all US transferable points currencies, making it easy to earn Flying Blue miles. Points from most Amex, Capital One, Citi and Chase credit cards can be transferred to Flying Blue.
Flying Blue miles will expire if your account has not been active for 18 months. All it takes is a small transfer or purchase of 1,000 points to keep all your miles from expiring, so keeping them active is easy.
Flying Blue call center has very friendly agents and it is a pleasure to call them compared to other call centers. They have service centers all over the world, but their European agents are generally well trained and more willing to help with complex requests.
Disposable Credit Card
However, Flying Blue allows you to keep the award before transferring your miles. You can suspend flights from Air France, KLM and partners for up to 72 hours before points transfer. This allows you to guarantee pricing so availability doesn’t disappear until you make the switch. At $15 per passenger, I think it’s pretty reasonable.
Flying Blue also has significantly lower surcharges than other European airlines such as British Airways, Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa. They found a middle ground. There is usually a $215 to $250 surcharge for awards flying from the US to Europe on Air France or KLM. Awards originating in Europe will be more expensive.
If you need to make any changes to your Flying Blue Award, the change fee is also quite reasonable. Change rewards or cancel rewards and make a new deposit for as little as $55 or €50. You can also cancel your reward up to two hours before check-in, which gives travelers a lot of flexibility.
Flying Blue also has some very generous routing rules. You can fly from South America to North America via Europe, from the US to Asia via Australia, or from the US to Africa via Europe (assuming you can find room for a bonus). Routes must be displayed on the Flying Blue website to book. Unfortunately, Flying Blue does not allow stopovers on award tickets.

Flying Blue also has partnerships with Qantas and Japan Airlines. You can redeem miles to travel on these airlines. This offers more award travel options to Asia and Australia.
Flying Blue once created a program for workers in the energy industry called Flying Blue Petroleum. The show was popular but unfortunately closed. It stopped accepting new members in 2019 and will close completely by March 31, 2021.
You cannot build an itinerary manually like in other programs. The itinerary must be available from origin to destination, which means that you cannot change a single leg in the itinerary or add another leg later.
Here’s an example of how it works. If you have booked a flight from New York to Paris and Barcelona, you cannot change the last leg without re-evaluating the entire award. If you want to go from New York to Paris to Rome, you will have to reset the price of the entire prize.

This can be a bigger issue if you book with a partner airline like Delta. Let’s say you’ve booked a Delta flight like Austin to Atlanta and Amsterdam. If you want to move your origin from Austin to Dallas, the Atlanta to Amsterdam segment should also offer awards space. Otherwise, you will have to start from scratch.
This also means that you cannot mix cabins on certain Flying Blue itineraries. Generally, you cannot mix economy and business class on the same ticket if there is no business class award space on a specific flight. Flying Blue will sometimes show a shorter connection in economy class in Europe, but other than that, you generally can’t mix cabins.
Flying Blue miles are the easiest miles to earn. Amex, Capital One, Citi and Chase points can be transferred to the program.
You can also earn Flying Blue miles by flying with Air France, KLM and their partners. There is also a shopping portal where you can earn Flying Blue miles for daily online purchases.

Flying Blue rewards redeemable miles based on how much you spend, not how often you fly. You will earn miles based on travel purchases on Air France, KLM, HOP and JOON. Not only can you earn miles on the ticket (less government-imposed taxes), but you can also earn miles with additional charges (such as paying for premium seats, baggage, etc.).
Flying with Air France and KLM isn’t much, but if you’re in Europe and you fly frequently, it’s worth including your flights in the plan.
You can earn Flying Blue miles whenever you fly with a SkyTeam airline or any partner outside the Air France and KLM alliance.
If you fly with a partner airline, you will earn miles based on your cabin class and distance flown. In this case, Flying Blue miles are in fact miles. Flying first and business class, you’ll earn more miles than you would on a discount economy ticket.

Flying Blue’s most useful partner in the US is Delta Air Lines. On Delta flights, you can earn up to 300% of your miles as bonus miles on a full-fare First Class ticket or just 25% on your cheapest Basic Economy ticket.
Amex, Capital One, Citi and Chase points are transferred to Flying Blue. The ability to mix and match a variety of transferable points makes it easy to earn Flying Blue miles. Few programs work with all transferable points currencies.
Points are transferred at a ratio of 1:1, except for Capital One points at a ratio of 2:1.5. Amex, Capital One and Citi offer occasional transfer bonuses, but Chase rarely offers transfer bonuses.
Flying Blue often sells bonuses for miles purchases and transfers between members. Given the number of transferable points that can be converted into Flying Blue miles, I generally don’t recommend buying them.
