Airline travel miles can save a huge amount of money. They are, for all intents and purposes, a currency: something that can be exchanged for goods and services, like actual dollars. But unlike dollars, they have no value that everyone understands and shares.

So we figured out the numbers to generate a monetary value for one of the airline’s most widely used currencies, Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles®. Miles can be redeemed for free flights, so the value of them corresponds to the cash price of a particular flight divided by the miles the airline charges for the same flight.

But it is not so clear. Because airlines can decide how many miles you need for a particular flight or upgrade, and can change this figure at will, their value is not fixed. Delta also uses “dynamic fares”, which means that there is no graph that specifies how many miles you need to fly over a certain distance. Prices may vary on request.

Frequent Flyer Guide To Delta Skymiles

In order to reach our estimate of 1.2 cents per kilometer, which is explained below, we take into account the risk of devaluation – essentially an increase in the price of the kilometers used for a flight – and, conversely, the frequent deals on Delta miles. This makes it cheap to fly with miles to destinations for sale.

You can spend your SkyMiles to fly for free on many Delta Partner Airlines, or purchase higher class upgrades on board. And while there is still a long way to go before the journey returns to its pre-pandemic levels, the number of passengers will increase as more people are fully vaccinated. The CDC still recommends against any unimportant trip, but that does not mean that it is not good now to map out future trips.

There is no exact science here, and the cost of your miles is also highly subjective, depending on how important the trip is for you personally. But as long as you save money on your travels, that’s a win in our book.

When it comes to acquiring Delta SkyMiles, flying Delta or its partners is just one of the possible ways. You can earn miles while shopping online and ordering food or ordering from restaurants, through Delta’s shopping portals or food program, while another popular way to earn it is by spending on Delta co-market credit cards.

Like all airlines and hotel currencies, Delta SkyMiles is a relatively difficult business of value because its issuer often lowers them by making a given redemption more expensive. Delta also did not publish fixed mileage awards. Flying when demand is high will cost you more.

Unlike credit card points (like American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards), airline miles are generally only available to fly with that airline or their partner, while credit card points can be used on many different airlines, as well as for purchases made through a compensatory Akeef. Credit statement. Because of this flexibility and enhanced availability, credit card points are even more important.

That said, using your Delta SkyMiles will help you create experiences that are not available to many, especially if you are flying first or business class. That can cost many thousands of dollars, but by using your miles you can fly for free.

With all that in mind, we did the math – and Delta Air Lines rated SkyMiles at 1.2 cents per mile. We took a look at the number of cash prices of flights and upgraded popular routes to popular s, in cash and miles, then compare the two. We have also considered the possibility of making airline mileage more expensive, reducing their costs.

Delta Skymiles Program: The Complete Guide

The route from New York to Los Angeles is one of the airline’s most popular flights. Delta competes here against several other airlines.

We reviewed a random week in July when the Peakrees returned in the summer, and here’s what you can expect to pay cash for a round trip:

The average cost of one kilometer over all classes on this route is 1,275 cents. (Basic and Main are Delta Names for the coaching class, with basic more restrictions but the same seats; the Comfort + is a trainer with a bit more legroom; and the Delta One is the Business Class equivalent, with premium service and chairs that revolve around the Betten.)

We then consider the cost of a week-long trip from Cincinnati to Minneapolis, two airports with a large Delta presence. Here’s what we found for cash prices:

Review Of Skymiles, The Loyalty Program Of Delta Air Lines

In this case, the average cost of a mile is 1,225 cents, less than the previous route. This may be due to the fact that Delta has more control over prices here, as it has a larger share of traffic between Cincinnati and Minneapolis than between New York and Los Angeles, where there is more competition.

Delta is a very large airline with a large international route network as well, and many travelers use their miles for international travel.

Let’s see what we get in the fall if we can reasonably expect Americans to visit Europe. How is Autumn in Paris a classic?

The average cost per mile here is 1.26 cents. Note that we do not charge taxes or fees on awards with SkyMiles, but on domestic flights they are as low as $ 11.

How To Claim Missing Delta Miles

Buying an upgrade with your SkyMiles is a pretty bad use of your miles. That’s because in this case Delta estimates it at exactly 1 cent, less than what you get when you travel miles for flights.

At $ 859 or 85, 900 miles, that’s an amount of exactly 1 cent per mile. You can get a better value from your miles by taking them to a higher class in the first place, rather than using them to upgrade.

There are several ways to earn Delta SkyMiles. This includes flying with Delta Air Lines or their partners, using the Delta SkyMiles shopping portal or Delta SkyMiles dining program, and even taking the lift. You can also earn a great deal of Delta Miles by using co-branded credit cards, which we review below.
