Teacher Certification Faq
The main program is approved by the Kentucky Professional Standards Board and the National Teacher Accreditation Council (NCATE).
In the UK College of Elementary Program, students are immersed in field experiences since they enter the teacher program during the undergraduate year. In addition to the entire semester of student education, elementary school students gain more than 200 hours of field experience in classroom observations, community contacts, school board meetings, and other school visits.
During the first and second year, students focus on meeting the UK’s core requirements with subjects related to the core. Juniors apply for admission to the Teacher Program (TEP) and meet the relevant requirements. Finally, during the final semester, elementary students are placed in a local school to fulfill the student learning component.
Prospective students who are not currently enrolled in courses in the UK may contact the College of the Director of Recruitment for information about the program.
Teaching At Vocational Schools
Counseling for current students before TEP: Current major majors who are not enrolled in the teacher program must meet with a professional counselor in Taylor Building Room 166 each semester before enrollment. Students are assigned a mentor based on the first letter of the last name.

The 8-week Harvard Bock Teaching Certificate online course is conducted by Harvard’s Bock Center for Teaching and Learning in collaboration with HarvardX. Students in this course will engage deeply in the most relevant research on effective teaching methods in the context of higher education, perfecting their own practice, portfolio and teaching philosophy.
